SAFEGUARDING

Karren Carr, CSO

As a club, we have a responsibility to ensure all of our members are safe. Running any activity where there are young people involved is a massive responsibility and one that we take very seriously. Meet Karen Carr, our Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO).

What is a CSO?
I am responsible for giving advice about the wellbeing, safeguarding and protection of young people at the club. It means that I make sure if a player, coach or volunteer has a concern about the safety of a young person they know how to report their concerns.

Did you have to get any special qualifications?

All qualified coaches have to go on a safeguarding workshop before they can pass. In my case, I also attended a more specific course run by England Netball called ‘Time to Listen’ which all CSOs need to go on. I have also completed a mental health first aid course, and mental health within sport. I work as a pastoral tutor within a sixth form college which gives me good knowledge of surrounding charities, which we can signpost you to for support and help.

What impact does a CSO have at MNC?
It is really important that all of our players and young volunteers feel safe, enjoy their training and matches and have positive relationships with their coaches. To protect a players wellbeing I also have to make sure the club has the right risk assessments, first aiders, emergency contact details and policies, such as Social Media and our players Code of Conduct.

What should a player do if they have a concern?

Speak to your coach or young netball organiser if you feel you are able to, if not call England Netballs dedicated safeguarding telephone line. 07595863991.
